Our Story

Midwest Tents & Events is the latest iteration of a 40+ year family-owned business. The story begins in 1976 when Richard Curtis purchased the family’s first rental store in Antioch, IL. A to Z Rental in Antioch was a hobby business before being purchased by the Curtis’ and under their leadership quickly grew and expanded. In 1980 a second store, C. Davis Rental in Chicago, IL, was purchased by the family, and in 1990 a third store, A to Z Rental in Fox Lake, IL, was opened. Through the ‘90s, Bob Curtis at A to Z Rental in Fox Lake, expanded the offerings from tools, trailers, and construction equipment, to backyard party tents, tables, and chairs. As Adam Curtis came of age, he picked up the ball and expanded the company’s offerings to include wedding tents, staging, dance floors, and other higher-end items. In 2014 Midwest Tents & Events was born in DeKalb, IL, placed strategically to serve existing and new clients across all of Northern Illinois from the Mississippi to Lake Michigan. The decision was made to focus exclusively on the event rental aspect of the business and the tool, trailer, and construction equipment rental was not included in the new location.

In 2020 the world was taken by storm when the COVID-19 pandemic caused world-wide shutdowns and limitations on gatherings. Events large and small were cancelled en masse resulting in massive financial loss for the company and incredible uncertainty for our team members. Quick decisions were made to bring tool, trailer, and construction equipment rental back into the fold. Thus, DeKalb Tool Rental was born!
